Nursing isn't just a job. It's a passion, a calling, an education. It requires not only specialized training, but also stamina, dedication and sacrifice.

These critical traits were exemplified by nurses honored Tuesday, May 5 at the third annual Celebrating Nurses luncheon. Debra Allen, the Triad's 2009 Nurse of Distinction, and the nine top nominees were honored at the event.

Allen, 50, was chosen from a field of nominees that was narrowed to 10 finalists selected by the N.C. Nurses Association Awards Committee. The award was announced by Eileen Kohlenberg, president of the N.C. Nurses Association. The event was held in partnership with the News & Record's Triad Careers division and the NCNA, and the program coincided with National Nurses Week.

The other finalists honored Tuesday were: Diane Bell, a registered nurse with Randolph Cancer Center; Thomas Brown, a registered nurse with Randolph Hospital; Leslie Butcher, a registered nurse with Brenner Children's Hospital; Lenora D. Clapp, a registered nurse and supervisor with the Randolph Correctional Center, part of the N.C. Department of Corrections; Cynthia E. Knust, a registered nurse with Moses Cone Health System; Marsha Long, a licensed practical nurse with Jesse Helms Nursing Center in Monroe; Jan Parker, director of patient care at Hospice and Palliative Center of Greensboro; Marsha Roddenberry, a registered nurse with High Point Regional Health System; and Sarah Turner, a registered nurse with Kids Path at Hospice and Palliative Center of Greensboro.

"Your stories are an inspiration," said Allen Johnson III, editorial page editor for the News & Record. Johnson introduced the finalists, who attended the event with family members, coworkers and friends, as well as representatives of sponsoring organizations and companies.

In addition to Triad Careers and the NCNA, additional major sponsors were Moses Cone Health System, High Point Regional Health System and Randolph Hospital.
