Celebrating Nurses 2013
Kelly Schiebel named 2012 Triad Nurse of Distinction
The News & Record's Triad Careers division and the N.C. Nurses Association paid tribute to local nurses on Thursday with the 2012 Triad Nurse of Distinction award, as part of National Nurses Week.
Kelly Schiebel, an RN case manager at Home Health of Randolph Hospital, was picked by the NCNA as the overall winner from the 10 finalists the organization chose earlier this year.
More than 100 nurses from Triad hospitals and health agencies were nominated for the sixth annual award, which recognizes registered nurses who make a positive impact on patients and the community, demonstrate value as professional registered nurses, have proven leadership abilities and embody the diversity of the profession. The awards are presented during National Nurses Week (May 6-12).

Schiebel, who has been in the field for 24 years, manages the pediatric population for Home Health of Randolph Hospital. Nine of those 24 years were spent doing home health visits to follow up on children and their families, and some of the conditions she saw during those visits led her to create the Caring Closet, a resource for needy families.
News & Record president and publisher Robin Saul, who presented the award Thursday during a luncheon at the Proximity Hotel, said that all 10 nominees were winners. Jean Reinert, who was named Triad Nurse of Distinction in 2011, was on hand to introduce each finalist.
"I was shocked," Schiebel said after the presentation. "There are so many wonderful nominees, I never thought it would be me." Schiebel said her mother, who was at the luncheon with her, started crying when her name was announced.
Scheibel said the videos about each of the finalists were all moving, and she said she was in tears herself when she went up to accept a framed photo given to all the finalists.
"It just proves to me how much nurses are needed. Everyone's a winner."
The other finalists were Nellie Ammons, High Point Regional Health System; Aimee Angrave, Advanced Home Care; Sarah Clark, Cone Health Simulation Center; Janet Dawson, Guilford Park Presbyterian Church; Christine W. Flinchum, Randolph Hospital; Courtney Keatts, Cone Health, Annie Penn Hospital; Nicole Luther, High Point Regional Health System; Tracy E. Robertson, Fresenius Medical Care; and Sonya Stafford, High Point Regional Health System.
